Profile Information

School or Organization
Afforestation and Soil Conservation Society
Team Name
Kubiti Teak Plantation Group
Project Title
President
Project Description
This group was formed in 2004 with ten members most of which are school children from the the same community with the idea of raising money for its members and the whole community and also to protect the environment by planting trees along the edges of roads rivers and around homes .However, the group contributed some money and bought a piece of land worth about thirty hectors. The group organized and cleared the land, and wrote a letter of application to the Department of Forestry Jasikan for seedlings. The group planted two thousand(2,000)teak seedlings and five hundred(500)Avenue trees, in and around the community. The second year being 2005 the group established a nursery and raised about five thousand(5000)seedlings ,and sold two thousand(2000)seedlings and planted three thousand (3000)seedlings. During the third year the group cultivated another 3000 and sold 3000 to private individuals. The fourth year being 2007 the group raised 4500 seedlings and planted all. Actually the group chooses this project in order to make money and improve upon the living conditions of the people in the community. and also protect the environment by replanting of trees that are indiscriminately fell down by illegal chainsaw operators in the community.
This project when fully executed will be beneficial to the local environment because trees are planted around settlements, along ,roads, on the edge of water bodies; and by the sides of peasant homes ,this trees prevent wind and erosion in the community. However, the most direct impact of this project on the environment is the establishing of forest ecosystem. Which secures the long –Term protection of the environmental service of forest ,notably its biological diversity, soil conservation, water shed regulation and climate regulation, which can bring rainfall in the community. Besides, the project will actually benefits the entire community. Despite the fact that there were few problems that actually militate against the project initially with the determination of the group we were able to stand by all. In view of the fact that the project is on going one its shows more sustainable ways of using the resources in the biome. The project is producing more natural forms of plantation, integrated forms of ecosystem management, and development of forest based on selective felling rather than clear-cut felling indiscriminately in the community. The Avenue trees serves as wind breaks ,recreational centers and also check erosion in the community. In short the project will actually brings a lot of changes in the lives of the community members and direct their attitudes towards preserving and conserving their environment. In fact the task ahead of the group is to be able to established an additional five hectors of teak plantation before the end of September 2009.And this project will be conducted in the community with technical support from department of forestry. The following is the project time table for 2009/2010
First Week in May 2009 clearing of the site.
Second week in May 2009 pegging and lining.
Third and Fourth Week in May 2009 digging of the holes.
Second Week in June 2009 planting Of seedlings. till September 2009.
FOR 2010;

Then February transferring of seedlings from seed bed to nursery .
