Going Green........It's Easy !
Project Description
My main goal for my Girl Scout Gold Award Project was to raise environmental awareness in a unique way. My project taught individuals about creative and functional ways they could help the environment on a daily basis. I organized a section of a holiday bazaar that focused on the theme of “Going Green.” I partnered with a variety of organizations and officials to achieve this goal. Representatives from local and national organizations set up booths at the event to educate visitors and provide information about their services. The representative groups at the event were: Austin Water Utility, National Wildlife Federation, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, City of Austin Solid Waste Services, Keep Austin Beautiful, and Ecology Action. In addition to these organizations’ booths, I organized other interactive booths presenting the concept of “upcycling”. “Upcycling” is a sustainability technique in which in waste materials are used to create new products. My “upcycling” booths displayed arts and crafts made out of recyclable objects and also provided the visitors a chance to exercise their own creative talents in making new things from used objects. Furthermore, I made and distributed an educational flyer outlining the benefits of recycling, reducing, and reusing, and I developed a brochure that provides instructions for crafts that can be made from used objects. I mailed this “upcycling” brochure to the art programs at 62 public schools in my community to increase youth environmental awareness, and was invited to creatively demonstrate my project to many groups of younger kids. I visited elementary school art classes and events to hold interactive discussions with the students about their own views on the environmental movement, as well as to educate them about conserving the resources around them, such as the paper, aluminum, and plastic that they come into contact with every day.

Welcome to the site, Dipona! Your project seems really interesting. For those of you who don't know what "upcycling" is, here is a quote from Wikipedia: Upcycling is a component of sustainability in which waste materials are used to provide new products.
