We found first of a problem in our communtiy. Over time it became clear that elelmentary school level children have little to no knowledge on what recycling and going green means and is all about. So, we set up a friendly competition at Northside Elementary School. We sent out flyers to all children in each grade and class. Our competition was called the Recycle Showdown. We had children compete by creating sculptures out of recycleable materias, such as cans, bottles, plastic shopping bags, etc. Then, on March 9, 2010 the 34 teams came in and dropped off their magnificent sculptures. We had three volunteer judges come in. Then, we had all of the teams come back where we gave them participation medals, made by hand from recycled bottle caps, and announced winners of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, Most Creative, Most Popular(spectators choice), and Team Spirit. The goal was achieved. The goals were to put elemenatry kids in a hands on activity to get them to learn about going green and recycling and to teach them core values of becoming and being part of a team na getting along in that team. The Recycle Showdown was extremely successful.
